Glassblowing
Glassblowing is a second trade layered on top of Alchemy. An alchemist who has learned it can take sand to a forge and blow it into flasks, vials and glassware with a blow pipe. It is not a skill of its own and costs no skill points, but it must be learned from a book that only a Grandmaster alchemist can read, and that book is not sold by anyone.
Learning glassblowing ↑ top
- Grandmaster Alchemy. The book refuses to teach anyone below 100.0 Alchemy.
- The book. Crafting Glass with Glassblowing is the reward at the end of the Glassblower's two-part quest chain. No vendor stocks it, so the chain is the only way to it (see Quests).
- Sand, which is dug rather than bought. See Sand on the Mining page.
Reading the book consumes it and teaches you the trade for good.
The blow pipe and the forge ↑ top
The blow pipe comes from one place: the Glassblower sells it, and no other vendor stocks it. Alchemists do not, so plan a trip to him for spares rather than expecting to top up at the nearest apothecary. Double-click a blow pipe to open the Glassblowing menu. Like every crafting tool it holds a limited number of uses and wears out. The menu opens for anybody holding one: the two requirements answer separately when you pick a piece, so short on skill gives "Thou must be a Grandmaster Alchemist to blow glass." and having the skill without the book gives "You haven't learned glassblowing. Perhaps studying a book would help!"
Glassblowing is one of the few crafts that needs somewhere to stand. You must be beside a forge (the same forges the smiths use, in any town). The menu opens wherever you are, so nothing warns you in advance: pick a flask away from a forge and the attempt is refused with "You must be near a forge to blow glass."
Sand ↑ top
Sand is the only material glassblowing uses, and there is just one kind of it, so there is no resource picker and no tiers to weigh up. You dig it out of beaches and desert with a shovel, which is its own small unlock: it needs Grandmaster Mining and the sand book, itself the reward of the Glassblower's first quest. The Mining page covers the digging.
Bottles are not glassblowing. Empty bottles are vendor goods, bought from alchemists by the handful; you cannot blow your own, and an alchemist stocking up for a potion run should still buy them as always.
How often it works ↑ top
Every glassblowing recipe shares one skill window (80 to 120), but the book requires 100 Alchemy before you can craft at all, so what you actually see is:
| Alchemy | Chance to succeed |
|---|---|
| 100 (fresh Grandmaster) | 75% |
| 110 | 87.5% |
| 120 (the cap) | 100% |
Glassblowing is the gentler of the two quest-taught trades: it starts at three attempts in four rather than one in two. Raising Alchemy past 100 with skill scrolls closes the gap, and at the 120 cap nothing breaks.
Glassware is decorative. There are no magic properties to roll, no maker's mark, and no exceptional result to hope for. A piece either forms or it shatters.
Recipe scrolls ↑ top
The Flasks group waits behind a single Glass Flasks recipe scroll, found out in the world as a champion spawn reward. One scroll unlocks all eight flasks at once, and you must have read the glassblowing book before the scroll will teach you anything. The hourglass and the vials need nothing but the book. See Recipes.
What you can blow ↑ top
The spinning hourglass is worth singling out: it is crafted running, with its sand falling, and you can stop and restart it whenever you like. Right-click it for Stop the sand or Start the sand. It works in your pack, or locked down in a house you have the right to release things in.
