Training Dummy

A training dummy is a house add-on: a padded post you attack to raise a weapon skill without finding anything that fights back. It is worth setting one up early, and worth knowing when to stop using it.

What it trains, and how far

Whatever weapon you are holding decides the skill: Swordsmanship, Mace Fighting or Fencing. Empty-handed works too and trains Wrestling.

The dummy only teaches up to 25.0. Past that it has nothing left to give and says so: "Your skill cannot improve any further by simply practicing with a dummy." It is a way through the first, slowest stretch of a weapon skill, not a substitute for fighting. See Skills Overview for what comes after.

Archery cannot be practised on it ("You can't practice ranged weapons on this."), and neither can anything while you are mounted.

Practising

Double-click the dummy once. You get "You begin practicing on the dummy. Move to stop." and your character keeps swinging on its own, about one swing every three seconds, until something stops it. There is no clicking for each blow.

The session ends when you:

  • take a single step (this is the usual way, and gives "You stop practicing on the dummy.")
  • double-click the dummy again
  • get on a mount, put away your weapon, or swap to a bow
  • walk out of your weapon's reach, or die
  • reach 25.0 in the skill

A session belongs to one person. While someone is practising, anyone else double-clicking gets "You have to wait until it stops swinging." Sessions are not saved, so a server restart or a world save ends them and you simply double-click again.

Automatic, not faster

The swing rate and the skill check behind it are exactly what they were when every blow needed its own click. Auto-practice saves your clicking hand, not your time.

Where to find one

You do not need to own one. The arena beside the bank in Adena has several dummies set up for anyone to use, which is the easiest place to spend the first 25 points of a weapon skill.

For your own, training dummies are Carpentry house add-on deeds (68.4 to 93.4 skill, 55 boards or logs and 60 cloth), in east and south facings. Place the deed in a house you have the right to build in. Any dummy you can walk up to works, so one in a friend's house trains you just as well as your own.
