Blacksmithy

Blacksmithy turns ingots — smelted from ore dug up with Mining — into metal armor, shields, and melee weapons. It is the shard's main source of powerful gear: on Renaissance-era Sagas an item's magic tier comes from the colored metal it is smithed from, not from random properties. General crafting rules (success chance, exceptional quality, tool uses) are in the Crafting Overview.

What you need

  • A smith's hammer (made by tinkers; colored hammers add exceptional chance and last longer).
  • To stand near both an anvil and a forge, within 2 tiles and in line of sight. Public smithies have both; carpenters can craft anvil and forge deeds for your house.
  • Ingots — see Resources.

Metals

Iron is the default. Higher metals need skill just to select them from the menu, and they give weapons and armor a built-in magic level:

Metal Skill to work Magic level
Iron ingot Iron 0 none
Shadow Iron ingot Shadow Iron 60 Ruin / Defense
Copper ingot Copper 80 Might / Guarding
Bronze ingot Bronze 100 Force / Hardening
Verite ingot Verite 110 Power / Fortification
Valorite ingot Valorite 120 Vanquishing / Invulnerability

Dull Copper, Gold, and Agapite do not exist on Sagas. Valorite requires 120 skill — only a smith raised past Grandmaster with skill scrolls can work the best metal in the game.

What you can smith

The range is the recipe's minimum and maximum skill: 0% chance at the minimum, 100% at the maximum.

Repair Deeds are also craftable — one per material tier (regular, shadow, copper, bronze, verite, valorite). Each costs 20 of that tier's material and needs the skill that tier normally requires.

Exceptional quality and maker's mark

Exceptional armor gets +15% armor rating and +20 durability; exceptional weapons get +10% damage and +20 durability. Blacksmithy's exceptional-chance penalty eases as your skill passes 95, and a colored hammer or a citizenship town bonus raises it further. At 100+ skill you can stamp your maker's mark on exceptional pieces.

There is no enhancement — you cannot upgrade a finished item to a better metal. Smith a new one instead.

Resmelt and repair

  • Resmelt — the craft menu can melt smithed items back into ingots. Your own crafted items return half their recipe's ingots; store-bought or looted gear returns just 1. Higher metals need skill to smelt: Copper 65, Bronze 80, Verite 95, Valorite 110.
  • Repair — a smith's hammer repairs metal weapons, armor, and shields. See Repairing.

Raising the skill

Blacksmithy goes to 120 with Crafting skill scrolls — the whole point of a 110/120 smith is working Verite and Valorite, and finishing the top recipes (Plate Tunic, Plate Legs, Dragon armor) reliably.

A cost-effective ladder — resmelt what you make to recover half the ingots:

Skill Make
0–25 Bucklers and Wooden Kite Shields (or buy early points from a Blacksmith NPC)
25–45 Daggers, Maces, Chainmail Coifs
45–60 Metal Kite Shields, Cutlasses
60–75 Heater Shields, Longswords, Chainmail Tunics
75–90 Plate Gorgets and Plate Gloves (cheap 10–12 ingot plate)
90–106 Plate Arms and Plate Leggings
106–120 Plate Tunics and Plate Helms; craft Daemon armor once you have the recipes

Town Quests for smiths

Your smithing is worth citizen points

The town Blacksmith posts crafting town quests for a set number of one item. They pay citizen points, town score and reward currency, and count toward Town Exports.

Switch it on first. Toggle Craft for Quest in the crafting menu. The label is greyed out until you have a quest for the highlighted item, and turns green once the toggle is on. While it is on, a qualifying craft spends your materials and counts toward the quest — you do not keep the item.

Longer quests get pickier: they may name an ore — iron up to verite — and demand exceptional quality, on roughly a fifth of daily quests rising to half of monthly ones.

Nothing is wasted if you miss the requirement: a craft that does not qualify is simply made the normal way and stays yours, it just earns no progress.
