Dungeon Bosses

Dungeon Bosses are the shard's hardest PvM fights. Unlike Champion Spawns, they are not handed out on a weekly timetable: the community earns them. Hunting in a boss dungeon fills that dungeon's boss meter, a full meter raises an altar out of the floor, and a ritual with champion skulls draws the boss out. The boss itself carries no loot at all; everything you get comes through the damage score, the same way champion loot works.

The first dungeon boss is Lithos the Soulless in the Crematorium. The other three boss dungeons (Darkness, Pyros, Hydros) get their bosses later.

How a boss is drawn out ↑ top

  1. Fill the boss meter. Every point of Skill Mastery XP earned inside a boss dungeon also counts toward that dungeon's community boss meter. Kills and gathering both count, on every level of the dungeon including the boss room, and the deep-dungeon XP bonus counts too. Each player's own XP is added where they stand, so a party hunting together fills the meter faster but no kill is counted twice.
  2. The altar rises. When the meter is full, the whole shard is told that something in the dungeon refuses to settle and its master can now be drawn out. The dungeon's boss altar rises out of the floor and starts accepting skulls. It stays up for as long as it takes; there is no time limit.
  3. Offer champion skulls. The altar wants the skull of that dungeon's own champion (for the Crematorium, Morghul's Skull of Death). Stand within 2 tiles and either drop the skull on the altar or double-click it and pick Offer a skull. The altar's gump shows one skull slot per skull the ritual still needs. Every skull you offer earns you 3,000 bonus points of fight score in the coming fight.
  4. The ritual. When the last skull is delivered the altar sinks back into the ground, a bloody pentagram fills up on the spot over about ten seconds, and the boss appears in its centre.
  5. The fight. Kill the boss. If no living player stays within 30 tiles of it for a full hour, the boss gives up and vanishes, the offered skulls are gone, and nobody is rewarded.
  6. Afterwards. The altar stays sunk. If the ritual was the one the full meter promised, the meter starts again from zero. It keeps counting during the fight, so a very busy dungeon can have its next boss ready soon after the last one fell.

Watching the meter ↑ top

Inside a boss dungeon the Event Info panel shows an extra row at the bottom, "Crematorium Boss" for example, with a small progress bar (hover it for the percentage). The row turns green and reads Running while the dungeon's boss is out.

Skull cost ↑ top

The first ritual of a day costs one skull. Every ritual after that on the same day costs one skull more: two for the second boss, three for the third, and so on. At midnight (server time, the same clock as the daily quests) the price falls back to one. Skulls are consumed by the ritual and are not returned if the altar is taken down.

Scheduled boss events ↑ top

Staff can also put a boss on the weekly schedule. It then shows on the Event Info panel like a champion spawn with a countdown; at the start time the altar rises on its own (the panel reads Altar up) and the skull ritual runs as usual. Once the boss has spawned the panel switches to Running and an Event Gate opens to it. A scheduled boss does not spend the community's meter: the progress players have made toward their own boss survives the fight.

Rewards ↑ top

Damage matters: the 4,000 score ↑ top

Like a champion spawn, the fight tracks all damage you and your pets deal to the boss and to everything it summons. Your skull offerings are added to the same score. Most world loot is protected: you need a damage score of at least 4,000 in that fight to pick it up, to count as a participant and to receive a backpack reward. When the boss dies, everyone in the fight is told their damage and their place in the damage table.

Check your score history any time with the [BossScore command, or open the in-game Help menu and pick Boss Scores under Quick Links.

What drops ↑ top

Nothing is on the corpse: it is empty, and the boss gives no fame or karma. Instead, when the boss falls, loot is scattered around the spot where it died and every participant gets a reward item straight into their backpack. The top three damage dealers get extra backpack items.

  • Recipe scrolls, mastery gems and mastery souls for the Skill Mastery system, skill scrolls, skill cap increase balls, scroll slot deeds, reagents, gold piles and magic items: the same world loot a champion leaves, without the champion skull and without the gold rain.
  • Boss rewards, found at no other source: a Bone Container and two unique decor pieces per fight, picked from the Bone Throne, Bone Table and Bone Couch deeds and a set of rare gravestones (never two gravestones in the same fight). They carry the Boss Reward rarity tag.

Quantities scale with the number of participants, the same way champion loot does. A small group is treated as five participants, so a handful of players still gets a worthwhile pile.

Taking part in a won fight (4,000+ score) also counts toward the Boss Slayer achievement chain: five ranks, from 10 up to 100 won boss fights.

Boss titles ↑ top

Boss titles work exactly like champion titles, on their own ladders: one ladder per dungeon, three ranks each. Every won fight adds your entire damage score from that fight to the dungeon's ladder; a fight that is abandoned awards nothing. Points atrophy by 7% every day, so a title reflects how hard and how often you currently fight that boss.

The other dungeons get their ladders when their bosses arrive.

The title you display is chosen automatically across both families: the best champion or boss ladder wins by rank first, then by points, and a Harrower title outranks them all. It is hidden by default: single-click yourself, open your context menu and pick "Toggle Monster Title Display".

Open [BossScore and click My Title Scores for your points and title on every boss ladder, and which title your paperdoll shows. Top Scorers next to it lists the current top 10 of each ladder (refreshed hourly).
