Masonry
Masonry, or stonecrafting, is a second trade layered on top of Carpentry: the same hands, a different material. Where the saw turns boards into furniture, a mallet and chisel turns granite into vases, heavy stone tables and statues. It is not a skill of its own and costs no skill points, but it has to be learned from a book that only a Grandmaster carpenter can read, and the book is not for sale anywhere.
Learning masonry ↑ top
Three things stand between you and your first carving:
- Grandmaster Carpentry. The book refuses to teach anyone below 100.0 Carpentry.
- The book itself. Making Valuables with Stonecrafting is the reward at the end of the Stone Crafter's two-part quest chain. No vendor stocks it (see Quests for where that chain starts).
- Granite to work with, which means mining for it. See Granite on the Mining page.
Reading the book consumes it, teaches you the trade permanently, and drops a starter mallet and chisel into your pack. It is a public moment: everyone nearby sees the flourish and hears the chisel strokes as the knowledge lands.
The mallet and chisel ↑ top
The Stone Crafter sells the tool itself, and that part has never been gated, so you can stock up long before you can use them. Double-click a mallet and chisel to open the Masonry menu. Like every crafting tool it holds a limited number of uses and wears out; keep a spare.
Unlike the saw, there is no station to stand at. Stonecrafting works wherever you are.
The menu opens for anybody holding the tool, so it is no guide to whether you may use it. The two requirements answer separately when you pick a piece: short on skill gives "Thou must be a Grandmaster Carpenter to shape stone.", and having the skill without the book gives "You haven't learned masonry. Perhaps you need to study a book!"
Granite ↑ top
Granite comes in the same six tiers as ore, and you gather it while mining: a pickaxe set to Ore and Stone turns up granite alongside the metal. The full method is on the Mining page.
| Granite | Comes from | |
|---|---|---|
![]() |
Granite | ordinary iron veins |

Shadow Iron Granite | shadow iron veins |
![]() |
Copper Granite | copper veins |

Bronze Granite | bronze veins |

Verite Granite | verite veins |

Valorite Granite | valorite veins |
All six can be picked in the craft menu with the arrows beside the resource picture, and because the book already demands Grandmaster Carpentry, no tier is ever out of reach. The moment you can carve at all, you can carve valorite.
Colour carries over. A piece always keeps the colour of the granite it was cut from, so the tier you choose is a decorating decision rather than a question of quality: a valorite vase is no sturdier than an iron one, it is simply a different colour.
How often it works ↑ top
Every masonry recipe shares one skill window (80 to 120), but the book requires 100 Carpentry before you can craft at all, so the bottom of that window is unreachable. What you actually see is:
| Carpentry | Chance to succeed |
|---|---|
| 100 (fresh Grandmaster) | 50% |
| 110 | 75% |
| 120 (the cap) | 100% |
That makes stonecrafting notably rougher than the other trades at Grandmaster, where a craftsman is used to succeeding most of the time. Pushing Carpentry past 100 with skill scrolls is what fixes it, and at the 120 cap a carving never fails at all. A failed attempt can cost you the granite, so it is worth mining a deep stock before a long session.
These are decorative pieces: there are no magic properties to roll, no maker's mark, and nothing an exceptional result would record. A carving either comes out or it does not.
Recipe scrolls ↑ top
Only the statues can be carved straight out of the book. The other two groups each wait behind a recipe scroll found out in the world:
| Group | Needs |
|---|---|
| Statues | nothing beyond the book |
| Decorations (the stone vases) | the Stone Vases scroll |
| Furniture (chair and tables) | the Stone Furniture scroll |
One scroll unlocks its whole group, not a single item, and you must already have read the masonry book before a stonecrafting scroll will teach you anything. Recipe scrolls turn up as rewards from champion spawns; see Recipes.
One oddity: a scroll labelled Stone Statues teaches Glass Flasks. It shares its recipe slot with the glassblowing scroll, and the statues need no scroll at all. See Recipes.
What you can carve ↑ top
The tables are always worth a word of warning: the four stone tables are crafted as deeds, which you then double-click indoors to place the finished table. That is why they show a deed in the list rather than the table itself.
