Herding
Herding lets you tell an animal where to walk. That is genuinely all it does — there is no gold, no combat use, no crafting tie-in. It is one of the shard's true niche skills, with exactly one practical trick: positioning animals for tamers.
How It Works
Equip or double-click a shepherd's crook (carpenters make them, plain ones drop as loot), target a herdable animal within 10 tiles, then click the spot you want it to go. On a success "The animal walks where it was instructed to."
- Herdable: any tameable animal or creature (paragons refuse). A handful of monsters at champion spawns — imps, dragons, dire wolves and the like — can also be herded.
- Difficulty scales with the creature's taming requirement: a sheep is trivial, a dragon demands a master shepherd. If your skill is far above the target's difficulty you get "That wasn't even challenging" — and no gain.
Is It Useful?
Barely. The one real use: a herder can pull a tameable creature out of a dangerous spot or walk it to a waiting tamer — see Animal Taming. Beyond that it is a roleplay skill for aspiring shepherds.
Skill Cap and Training
Herding caps at 100.0 (no skill scroll). Train it like taming in miniature: herd progressively harder creatures, since gains only come while the difficulty is near your skill. Farm animals to ~40, then forest animals (bears, great harts), then tougher tameables — the tamables list with its taming requirements doubles as a herding difficulty guide.
