Hiding

Hiding lets you vanish from sight instantly, with no reagents and no cost. It is the foundation skill of every rogue: Stealth requires it, and it is your main escape tool when a fight turns bad. Hiding caps at 100 — there are no Skill Scrolls for it.

How it works

Use the skill (or a macro) and, if the check succeeds, you become hidden on the spot. While hidden you are invisible to other players and most creatures. Almost any action — attacking, casting, using items, being hit — reveals you again, as does moving without the Stealth skill. Mounting or moving while on a mount also reveals you.

The skill can be used once every 10 seconds. You cannot hide while casting a spell.

When hiding fails

You cannot hide while an enemy is actively fighting you nearby and can see you. The distance you need to break away shrinks as your skill grows:

Hiding skill Enemy must be farther than
0 18 tiles
50 18 tiles
80 18 tiles
90 13 tiles
100 8 tiles

If an enemy in that range has line of sight to you, you get "You can't seem to hide right now." Breaking line of sight (a wall, a corner) lets you hide even at close range.

House bonuses

  • Inside a house you are friended to, hiding always succeeds.
  • Standing directly next to any house wall gives a large bonus (+50) to the check — the classic "hide at the house corner" trick works on UO Sagas.

What else Hiding does

  • Stealth requirement — you need Hiding 80 before Stealth works at all.
  • Resisting Detect Hidden — when someone uses Detect Hidden near you, it is your Hiding skill that is compared against their Detect Hidden skill.
  • Safer snooping — when a Snooping attempt fails, high Hiding halves your chance of being revealed.
  • Chest cracking — you can pick dungeon chests while hidden; see Dungeon Chests.

Training 0 → 100

Hiding gains from simply using the skill — success or failure, anywhere. The check runs against the full 0–100 difficulty range, so it gains steadily all the way to Grandmaster:

  1. 0–50: buy a few points from an NPC thief or mage trainer, then hide on cooldown while doing anything else (banking, crafting, travelling).
  2. 50–100: keep using it every 10 seconds. Avoid hiding inside your own house or right next to house walls while training — the bonus makes the check too easy to gain from.

See Skills Overview for the gain modifiers that apply to all skills.
