Resisting Spells
Resisting Spells ("Magic Resist") is your defense against hostile magic. On a UOR-era shard it does not add elemental resistances — instead each harmful spell that hits you rolls a resist check; on success the spell's effect is reduced or negated. Anyone who fights casters — mage, warrior or tamer — wants this skill.
What a successful resist does
| Spell | Effect when resisted |
|---|---|
| Magic Arrow, Fireball, Lightning, Energy Bolt, Explosion, Flame Strike | Damage reduced by 25% |
| Harm | Damage reduced by 10% |
| Chain Lightning, Meteor Swarm | Damage reduced by 50% |
| Paralyze | Duration halved |
| Poison | Completely resisted — you are not poisoned |
| Mana Drain, Mana Vampire | Completely negated |
Your resist skill also feeds into spell damage the other way around: the attacker's Evaluating Intelligence is weighed against your Resisting Spells, so high resist shaves off extra damage even when the resist roll fails.
Your chance to resist
The resist chance grows with your skill and shrinks against stronger casters and higher spell circles. As a rule of thumb, a Grandmaster resister facing a Grandmaster mage resists roughly 1 in 4 of the big attack spells (Energy Bolt, Flame Strike) and around 2 in 5 first-circle spells. Against weak monster casters the chance is far higher.
Skill cap and mastery
- Resisting Spells caps at 100 normally and can be raised to 120 with skill scrolls, once you are already Grandmaster. The extra points both cut incoming spell damage further and raise your resist chance.
- The scrolled points only count outside PvP. While you are flagged for PvP combat anything above 100 is ignored — for damage reduction and resist chance alike.
- Its Skill Mastery (PvM only, learned from a mage NPC at skill 90) is built around the Grimoire: your grimoire stores energy from spell damage you take, powering Magic Retaliation (bonus spell damage), the active strike Sudden Expulsion, the Silence perk and the ultimate Arcane Echo (reflects 400% of incoming magic damage).
What the 20 points are worth
Resisting Spells pays out twice, and both halves are linear — you get the same value from the 20th scroll as from the first.
Less damage taken. Damage is scaled by the gap between the caster's Eval Int and your resist. Every point you are ahead of the caster shaves 0.5% off the spell, so 20 points is a flat 10 points off the scalar:
| Caster's Eval Int | Your resist 100 | Your resist 120 | You take |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 (weak monster) | ×0.80 | ×0.70 | 12.5% less |
| 100 (GM mage) | ×1.00 | ×0.90 | 10% less |
| 120 (boss) | ×1.04 | ×1.00 | 3.8% less |
More resists. The resist roll also rises by +0.5 percentage points per skill point, so 20 scrolls give a flat +10 percentage points against every spell of every circle — a Grandmaster mage's Energy Bolt goes from roughly a 27% resist to a 37% one, and lower circles rise by the same ten points from their higher base.
Unlike Tactics, nothing here saturates: there is no ceiling that the last few scrolls run into.
Training 0 → 120
Resist only gains when hostile spells are cast at you, and the spell must still be challenging: each circle stops giving gains past a certain skill level.
| Your skill | What still trains you |
|---|---|
| 0 – 35 | Any spell, even 1st circle |
| 35 – 65 | 3rd–4th circle (Fireball, Lightning) |
| 65 – 85 | 5th–6th circle (Mind Blast, Energy Bolt) |
| 85 – 120 | 7th–8th circle only (Flame Strike, Chain Lightning, Meteor Swarm) |
Practical methods:
- Early on, cast Magic Arrow, Fireball or Lightning on yourself (this trains Magery and Eval Int at the same time) — heal up between rounds.
- Team up with a partner mage who casts on you while you keep yourself healed.
- From the mid-80s, hunt strong spell-casting monsters (liches, daemons, dungeon mages) — their high-circle spells are the only thing that still teaches you, and the dungeon gain bonus helps. See Skills Overview for gain modifiers.
